Session Descriptions

Doing the Good Work: Driving a More Inclusive Curriculum—Part 1
This session will equip you with both a personal awareness and professional guidelines to develop a more inclusive curriculum for a diverse student population.
In this interactive session, you will:
  • Refresh your understanding of the “big 3” barriers to inclusive content
  • Review a simple framework for how to mitigate these barriers
  • Understand specific editorial language HBP editors and learning designers use—and avoid—to ensure inclusivity
  • Start working through some examples of how these barriers may be appearing in our work and course materials
Doing the Good Work: Driving a More Inclusive Curriculum—Part 2
It’s time to roll up our sleeves and start digging in on a review of our materials, noticing what could be more inclusive and revising accordingly.
In this hands-on session, you will:
  • Get before-and-after examples of what inclusive language looks like in a syllabus
  • Workshop some of attendees’ own examples of syllabi and course materials in need of a review
  • Start actually auditing and editing your own content
Pre-work: Please bring (and send us in advance) any student-facing materials or language that you’d like to review and revise through an inclusive lens. Examples might include syllabi, course policies, website copy, PPT decks, lecture notes, handouts, etc.

Opening Up the Room: Engaging Effectively with Tough Topics
In this session, we will unpack the layers of leading a classroom as we discuss tough topics such as diversity, equity, social justice, inclusion and belonging. Professors teaching these topics in university courses do so at the intersection of complex social, political and personal realities. Given the consequential nature of these discussions, faculty must prepare to manage the emotion in the room. The instructor will share her own experiences with difficult dialogues, lead discussion on managing them, and then open the room to discuss the challenges faced by faculty in the audience.

Creating Inclusive Learning Team Environments
This workshop provides best practices to create and support inclusive teams for maximum performance. We will discuss types of diversity, how to build teams to maximize the positive impacts of diversity and minimize the negative impacts, and how to help diverse teams build cohesion. In addition to sharing best practices in the field and our experiences, we will also present data gathered from students about their perspectives on diverse teams and what they find works best for them. In short, we will help you think about how to build more inclusive student teams in your classes.

Skills Session: Identity Dynamics in the Learning Community
In this skills session, participants will consider who we are as individuals and the ways in which our and our students’ identities interact to create the learning community climate.  We’ll examine how our students’ identities interplay with our own assumptions and approaches as we lead our coursework.  How can we understand the dynamics of multiple intersecting identities to create an inclusive learning community?
